Rationale
The Science curriculum is divided into two strands, with 1 topic from Science Understanding being taught each term and Science Inquiry being taught over the year.

Biological sciences | Chemical sciences | Earth and space sciences | Physical sciences |
Science Inquiry
Questioning and predicting | Planning and conducting | Processing, modelling and analysing | Evaluating | Communicating | Collaborating and applying |
Students at Wandina Primary School attend Science lessons weekly with a specialist teacher to develop their scientific knowledge and inquiry skills. The lessons are delivered by explicitly teaching the content, followed by opportunities to engage in inquiry-based learning where students can show their understanding through hands-on investigations.
Students are explicitly taught scientific skills and the scientific method. They are encouraged to use these when participating in inquiry learning, with this knowledge being built upon over time from year 1 to year 6.
Students are given opportunities to enrich their curiosity and explore concepts and ideas that are new to them by using up to date and real-world resources including models, texts, equipment, samples and specimens.
All students are supported and encouraged to apply critical thinking, informed decision-making and research skills when considering the impact science has on everyday life, placing them to become successful life-long learners.
