Rationale
At Wandina Primary School, Physical Education (PE) is an essential part of a child’s development. It supports physical, social, and emotional wellbeing through regular participation in active learning. In the early years, we place a strong focus on developing Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching. As students’ progress through the school, these skills are expanded upon through engagement in a wide range of sports and physical activities.
Our PE programme encourages students to apply their movement skills in game-based contexts, where they learn about fair play, following rules, teamwork, and respectful competition. These experiences not only improve physical competence but also help children develop resilience, cooperation, and a positive mindset towards health and physical activity.
Opportunities
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 engage in regular, structured PE lessons that are developmentally appropriate and inclusive. Children are provided with a wide range of opportunities to explore movement and develop their skills, including:
- Fundamental Movement Skills development
- Modified games and team sports
- Athletics and cross country
- Fitness challenges and circuits
- Participation in House and interschool sports events
Initiatives
To enhance the PE experience, Wandina Primary delivers a number of whole-school and community-based initiatives:
- Daily fitness routines and active brain breaks
- Access to Sporting Schools grants and specialist clinics
- Participation in interschool sports carnivals (summer and winter)
- Specialist incursions such as gymnastics, AFL, netball and cricket
- Links with local sporting clubs and community organisations
Impacts
Through consistent and engaging PE experiences, students at Wandina Primary gain confidence in their movement abilities, improve their coordination, and develop important social and teamwork skills. By focusing on Fundamental Movement Skills in the early years and applying them in a variety of sports, we lay the foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity and sport, contributing to overall wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle.
