Indonesian Language Program at Wandina Primary School
Rationale
At Wandina Primary School, we believe that learning an additional language provides a wide range of cognitive, academic, and social benefits for students. Research shows that second language acquisition stimulates brain development, improves memory and concentration, and enhances skills in both English and Numeracy.
Beyond academic benefits, learning a language supports students in developing empathy, cultural awareness, and respect for diversity. Our Indonesian program empowers students to become global citizens with an appreciation of other cultures and perspectives, supporting their personal growth and identity as communicators in a multicultural society.
Approaches
Whole-School Participation:
All students from Year 1 to Year 6 take part in the Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) program, attending a 60-minute session each week in a dedicated Indonesian Classroom.
Specialist Teaching:
The program is delivered by our Specialist Indonesian Teacher, Ibu Sania, ensuring high-quality, consistent language instruction.
Core Learning Aims:
The program is built around three key goals:
- Developing linguistic competence
- Understanding language and culture
- Building students’ identities as communicators
Engaging Learning Strategies:
Students participate in a variety of interactive and meaningful learning experiences, which are built around authentic cultural experiences such as traditional games, cooking, music, dance, dress, and arts and crafts.
Through this immersive and engaging approach, students develop both their communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
