Positive Behaviour

Rationale

Wandina Primary School is committed to working with our school community to create an inclusive and safe educational environment that promotes positive student behaviour.  Our PBS purpose is to create a learning environment in which all members of our school community feel secure and safe.

What does this look like at Wandina Primary School?

The PBS approach centres on explicitly teaching expected behaviour and recognising the choices that students make by rewarding positive choices. Student agency and restorative practices guide our decision making.

TeachingRewards
Weekly PBS lessons– held via Teams and PA each Monday morning. Students discuss expected and unexpected behaviours,Immediate- WOW awards (paper slips in faction colours). These are used for voucher draws and to decide the winning faction who selects the long term rewards
Fortnightly Behaviour focus– discussed at Morning meetings, in class and reinforced through classroom visuals.Short term- weekly prize draw of 3 WOW awards per faction. Held at the weekly PBS assembly.
Expectations posters- visuals that reinforce expected behaviour displayed throughout the school and in each classroomIntermediate- voucher draws awards at each assembly
Behaviour matrix– displayed in classrooms.Long term- Mid and End of Term whole school rewards

What we can do to support Positive Behaviour at Wandina Primary School:

  • Follow the school values and expectations.
  • Act with integrity,
  • Speak out when they feel unsafe,
  • Report problems to a staff member as soon as possible to ensure matters can be addressed as quickly as possible.

 

  • Be consistent,
  • Utilise restorative practices to process and address student behaviour,
  • Use the school behaviour flow chart to address student behaviour,
  • Teach and reteach student expectations, using the PBS lessons, matrix and fortnightly expectations,
  • Reward students with short-term WOW awards, naming the behaviour or expectation that students have shown i.e., “Thank you for being Responsible and picking up your rubbish.”.
  • Communicate openly with parents and students.
  • Display in classroom: fortnightly PBS focus (2x A4 with changeable Velcro visuals), A3 behaviour matrix (2x- one for front, one for back of class), 4 A3 School Wide behaviour expectations posters.
  • Follow the Education Department Code of Conduct and Behaviour Management Policy,

 

  • Communicate feedback to classroom teachers in a timely manner,
  • Maintain open communication with the school,
  • Promote and work to maintain a positive school culture,
  • Work with school stakeholders as partners in your child’s learning.

PBS uses tiered levels of intervention to meet students at their point of need, aligning with our school focus on differentiation and responsive learning environments. This aligns with the Department of Education guiding documents in this space:

Good Standing Policy – Maintaining a Safe and Inclusive Environment

Students Must:

  • Have at least 90% attendance
  • Follow all behaviour expectations
  • Wear the correct school uniform

Benefits:

  • Be invited to rewards events
  • Be invited to incursions and excursions
  • Be invited to special events

Students may lose Good Standing:

  • If they are suspended from school
  • If they are on a withdrawal from class
  • Receive 3 major behaviours
  • Receive 9 minor behaviours

Our Recess and Lunch Student Expectations

  • I will include others at play time and share play equipment.
  • I will follow our PBS expectations.
  • I will wear a hat or I play in the shade.
  • I will keep my hands and feet to myself because I am in control of my actions.
  • I will report any problems to the duty teacher and not be a bystander.
  • I will run on the grass and will walk on the concrete.
  • I will use my voice to solve problems.
  • I sit down to eat.
  • I purchase from the canteen after I have eaten.
